A COMING CYBER APOCALYPSE?
Will our technical success destroy us?

As the glaciers of the last Ice Age melted, we left the shelter of caves and became nomadic hunter-gatherers who, more than 12,000 years ago, built seasonal meeting places of gigantic stones.

In the 12,000 years since, we have gone from stone spear heads to atomic war heads, at ever increasing speed in the development of weapons and defenses.

We went from Kitty Hawk to the moon in just 66 years using rockets designed to carry atomic weapons. Since the first iPhone in 2007, we have gone to smart phones in pockets everywhere in the world, connected by the internet to everywhere else.

As we progressed in the arts and sciences over the millennia, there were people who foresaw where our technical development was taking us, but they were not able to intervene in the problems our technology created, even as they cannot today.

Now our cyber-dependent civilization can be destroyed by an enemy, or by an accident, or by a long-overdue massive solar storm.

A solar storm of the magnitude that struct our earth in the 1850s, can destroy our cyber systems and satellites, in a cascade that will envelope the earth.

I have been called a visionary in the creation of a significant part of what became our cyber-dependent world. I began this research and development with the 128 Mac in 1984. By 1996, I was warning of the dangers of being connected to the internet, for which I was called a Luddite scaremonger..
.
I warned that all digital storage is ephemera and will disappear with the the servers on which it is stored, as Yahoo wiped out all the many millions of families' photos and documents when it was no longer profitable for Yahoo to maintain those storage servers.

Each generation of digital coding, hardware, programming, and storage is replaced by something different which it is deliberately not compatible. This plammed obsolesence creates vast amounts of toxic waste. .

This plan to maximize profits profits the few at the top. It employs people to devise features that are useless and can make once wonderful products unusable.

At the same time, there is a desperate shortage of those technical people to protect our cyber systems from adversaries and criminals.

Sitting all day in the violent, unreal world of computer games is harning the health and the social and mental development of our children.

By the mid 1990s, it was obvious that the vulnerabilities of cyber technology, accessed by the internet, would be seized on by criminals, by exploiters of the public's us of the media, and by competing national powers, Now, everything about which the world was warned has become a present or immanent danger.

How are we preparing a cyber apocalypse?

In the stillness of Blessed Solitude,
